Lions-Rotary In Annual Ball Game
The annual softball comedy of errors, the Lions-Rotary Club challenge battle, will be played on the grammar school field next Tuesday night, starting at 8:00 o'clock. This will be the third battle of the has-beens, both previous contests having been won (?) by the Rotarians. The Lions den, irked by the ribbing they have taken over the past two years, are determined that the tables shall be turned this year and to this and have insisted upon certain rules and regulations, most important of which is some regulation as to who shall play for how long.
After several lengthy committee meetings it has been agreed that each club shall field three teams. The first teams, to be composed of ex-has beens, will open the contest and, provided their health can take the strain and the hour doesn't get too late, they are supposed to carry through for two full innings. The fellows who can still remember their batting averages from yesteryears will take over in the third and fourth innings; and both clubs will release all their younger reserves in a fast and frantic final 3-inning effort to save the day for their alma mater. It is also provided that any members of either club who are signed up this year in the city softball league are barred from participation in the game, other than to act as coaches.
The officials have been selected by mutual agreement. Rocco Pernetti, by virtue of his self-acclaimed authority, has been chosen to substitute for Happy Chandler as Commissioner; and Judge D. O. Germino, who by virtue of two past performances has well demonstrated his complete impartiality, will most probably take over at the microphone. The entire staff of local physicians has been recruited to be on hand with first aid kits and sedatives.
This super softball attraction is priced at 10 cents per person, the proceeds to be used to help defray expenses of the annual Kiddies Christmas Party, which is given each Yuletide under joint sponsorship of the two clubs.
